Disability Management is process-driven and
focuses on developing internal management systems designed to return all
employees (regardless of the origin of their injury or illness) to their
maximum productive capabilities via quicker post-injury response, early
case management, and return-to-work
programs.
Disability management
recognizes that the process begins with the design of internal structure
and programs. An organization must first decide how they want to
management disability and then select the process and vendors which best
meet specific needs.
Disability management recognizes that
people are ultimately at the heart of the process -- and that people
shouldn't be viewed as "occupational" or "non-occupational" -- subject to
different treatment depending on the label that's applied.
Disability Management starts with the question: is it disability that
differs or the systems which have evolved to manage disability? In
the end, people become disabled and if the characteristics of each person's
disability are similar, what sense does it make to approach managing
disability differently, depending on the "bucket" it happens to fall in?
Instinctively, the answers argue for integrated internal corporate
standards and practices.
